News, stories and insights July 30th 2026 New Report: From Shedding to Solutions Textile production generates an estimated 92,000 tonnes of microfiber losses every year, with more than 58,000 tonnes reaching the environment. New research shows that this pollution is far from inevitable.  From Shedding to Solutions is the first global assessment to quantify microfiber […]

Investors can measure the carbon they finance. Plastic is next.

Financial institutions have had a standard way to measure the carbon emissions financed through their portfolios for several years now. Plastic pollution has had no equivalent. An investor could hold shares in a packaging company, a textile manufacturer, or a consumer goods group without any consistent way to know how much mismanaged plastic waste that investment carries, or which of those holdings pose the highest direct health risk.

Microfiber shedding starts upstream: what new research means for textile manufacturers

The textile industry now has its first system-level baseline for how much microfiber pollution manufacturing creates, and where it can be reduced. A new report from Earth Action, From Shedding to Solutions, maps the full pathway from fiber generation through wastewater treatment to sludge disposal. The headline figure is large. The more useful finding is that most of the reduction potential sits upstream, in decisions made before production water is ever treated. That is the part manufacturers and brands can act on.

How a technical assessment enables better decision-making: A case study in watchmaking ecodesign

At Earth Action, we don’t do sustainability for sustainability’s sake. We build decision-making tools. The study we conducted with the Watchmaking Ecodesign consortium on component washing is a case in point: rigorous technical work that led one member Maison to revise its procurement specifications and redirect a capital investment. That’s exactly what ecodesign should produce — and precisely the kind of project we’re proud of.

Guiding action across the plastic lifecycle

Plastics are used across countless products and industries, yet understanding their full environmental consequences remains complex. Nils Thonemann, Assistant Professor at Leiden University and member of the PFN Scientific Committee, focuses on how environmental impacts from plastics are quantified and translated into decision-relevant information.
